Move means flagship linear channel is carried on Amazon as well as Sky
Discovery has several channels on the Sky pay-TV platform in Germany and Austria, but has been involved in a public spat with Sky over carriage of its services. The pair have also clashed over the marketing of soccer coverage after Eurosport picked up rights to some Bundesliga games.
Discovery has now agreed to a deal with Amazon that will see its flagship Discovery Channel launched as part of Amazon’s channels service for €3.99 ($4.64) a month. The deal allows consumers to watch the core linear channel, the same one carried on the Sky platform.
Amazon and Discovery had already teamed up to bring the Eurosport Player digital service to Amazon Channels. As well as the Discovery linear channel, hundreds of hours of programming from Animal Planet will be added to the Amazon service.
The Discovery Channel has been a staple of pay-TV lineups globally for many years, and the drive to make such a prominent service available outside of the traditional pay-TV environment could be a cause for concern for the likes of Sky.

This is part of our ambition to make our content available to fans across every screen and service.”
Amazon Channels launched in the U.K. and Germany in May with services from ITV, NBCU and RTL, among others. In the U.K., the Discovery Channel is already available on the service.
